How to spot a legit remote writing job
Most bad remote-job experiences are not scams, they are honest listings that were vague about location, or filled weeks ago. These are the checks worth running before you apply.
- Does the listing say where you can live?
- A real employer names the countries, regions or timezones they can hire in, because employment law forces them to. A listing that says only "remote" and nothing else is the most common reason people waste an application.
- Is there a named company behind it?
- Legitimate roles name the employer and link to their own careers page. Anonymous listings, or ones that only reveal the company after you pay or sign up, are the clearest warning sign there is.
- Are you ever asked for money?
- No genuine employer charges for training, equipment, a background check or a starter kit. Any request for payment, cryptocurrency or bank details before a signed contract is a scam, without exception.
- Does the pay match the work?
- Very high pay for very little skill is the oldest trick in the book. Compare the figure against what the same role actually pays elsewhere before taking it seriously.
- Was the interview real?
- Being hired purely over a chat app, with no video call and no questions about your experience, is not a hiring process. Reshipping, payment-processing and "buy equipment with this cheque" roles all start this way.
- Is the listing still open?
- Boards are full of roles that closed months ago. Check that the employer's own careers page still shows it before spending an hour on an application.
