Remote vs hybrid: what's the difference?
Both words appear in the same adverts, often for the same job, and the difference decides something quite large: whether you can choose where you live. Here is the plain version, and how to tell which one an advert is really offering.
The short answer
A remote job is done from wherever you live. Nobody expects you in a building. The only limit is which country or region the employer is able to hire in.
A hybrid job splits your week between home and a named office. Some days are flexible, but you must live close enough to commute. That is the real difference: hybrid is a location requirement wearing the word remote.
Side by side
Remote isn't one thing either
The bigger trap is that remote itself covers three quite different offers. Here is how today's live roles on Nomaders actually break down:
- Work from anywhere495
Live in any country. The advert says so explicitly.
- Region restricted1,997
Remote, but only within listed countries or timezones.
- Work from home9,425
Remote, but you must stay resident in one named country.
- Hybrid633
Part office, part home. Not remote in the usual sense.

How to read an advert in ten seconds
- Search the text for the word office. If a building is named, it's hybrid.
- Look for a number of days, "3 days on site", "twice a week". That's a commute requirement, however flexible it sounds.
- Treat remote-friendly, flexible and hybrid-remote as hybrid until proven otherwise. They are the softening words.
- Find the eligibility line: a country, a region, a timezone, or "anywhere". A truly remote advert always has one.
- If none of that appears, the advert simply doesn't say, which is not the same as saying you can live anywhere.
That reading is the job Nomaders does for you. Every listing carries the label before you open it, with the employer's own sentence behind the decision.
Common questions
What is the difference between remote and hybrid work?
Remote means you do the job from wherever you live and are not expected in an office. Hybrid means you split your week between home and an office, so you must live within commuting distance of that office. The practical difference is not how many days you sit at home, it is whether where you live is restricted by a building.
Is hybrid work considered remote?
No. Hybrid roles are often advertised under the word remote because part of the week is worked from home, but a hybrid job requires you to be near a specific office. If you cannot commute there, you cannot take the job.
How many days a week is hybrid?
Most hybrid roles ask for two or three days in the office, though anything from one day a week to four is common. The number matters less than the location requirement behind it.
Is remote better than hybrid?
It depends on what you want. Remote gives you freedom over where you live and no commute; hybrid gives you face-to-face time, easier informal learning and a clearer line between work and home. Remote roles also attract many more applicants, so they are harder to get.
How do I tell if a job is really remote or actually hybrid?
Look for a named office, a commuting radius, a stated number of days on site, or a phrase like remote-friendly or flexible. Any of those means hybrid. A genuinely remote advert names a country or region you must live in, or says you can work from anywhere, and says nothing about an office.
What does remote-first mean?
Remote-first describes a company whose default is remote: meetings, documents and decisions assume nobody is in a room together. It usually means a better remote experience than a company that added remote to an office culture, but it does not by itself tell you which countries they can hire in.
